Moses Kotane Local Municipality Partners with SALGA North West, Northam Zondereinde Mine, Child Welfare South Africa, Morula Foundation, Valterra Mine, Stella Khonou Foundation and the Bojanala Platinum District Disaster Management Centre Commemorated Nelson Mandela Day at St Catherine Hospice under the theme: “It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality.”
The programme was facilitated by Mr Tikologo Makhoana from SALGA. Delivering the welcoming remarks on behalf of office of the Mayor Mr Tshegofatso Motlhabane highlighted the significance of Nelson Mandela Day as a call for collective action, volunteerism and community service.
Ms Phyllis Adalette introduced the distinguished guests, while SALGA Provincial Director of Operations, Ms Desire Tlhoaele, outlined the purpose of the day, emphasising the importance of strategic partnerships in combating poverty, inequality and food insecurity.
As part of the day’s activities, stakeholders participated in cleaning, painting and gardening at St Catherine Hospice to improve the facility and create a more welcoming environment for its residents. Donations of food parcels, toiletries, blankets, tracksuits and gardening equipment were handed over to the hospice.
In promoting literacy and education, Nal’ibali donated books and newspapers to encourage a culture of reading, while Child Welfare South Africa, in partnership with the Morula Foundation, donated books to the Mogwase and Sefikile Libraries to support learning and educational development within the community.
The Nelson Mandela Day commemoration demonstrated the power of collaboration between government, the private sector and civil society in responding to the needs of vulnerable communities.
