The Moses Kotane Local Municipality has noted the videos and pictures currently circulating on social media highlighting the difficulties experienced when accessing several rural villages during wet and rainy days. These weather conditions disrupt daily commuting, affect public transport operations, and hinder community activities. As a predominantly rural municipality, adverse weather places increased pressure on our road infrastructure.
Due to the rural nature of Moses Kotane, payments for services such as water, refuse collection, rates, and other municipal fees are often minimal or, in some cases, not made at all. This directly affects the Municipality’s financial capacity and turnaround time in delivering services. Despite these financial constraints, the Municipality remains committed to improving the quality of life for all residents, which is reflected in the many ongoing and completed service delivery projects across various clusters.
The Municipality also wishes to clarify that within our jurisdiction there are National, Provincial, and Municipal (internal) roads – each maintained and funded by a different sphere of government. Internal roads fall under municipal responsibility, while provincial and national roads are funded and managed by their respective authorities.
As such, the Municipality continues to work collaboratively with all government spheres and private partners, in the spirit of “One government,” to bring essential services closer to the people.
Despite the limited revenue available to sustain municipal operations, Moses Kotane Local Municipality continues to deliver the best possible services. However, to strengthen and accelerate service delivery, the Municipality relies not only on the equitable share from national government but also on active participation and financial support from stakeholders, including ratepayers through the payment of property rates, investors, and partners in comprehensive local development.
Notwithstanding these challenges, the Municipality continues to intensify its service delivery efforts. Several internal road projects were successfully completed in the 2024/2025 financial year, with additional projects implemented in previous years – demonstrating our sustained commitment to improving accessibility across all 107 villages.
