Moses kotane Local Municipality Commemorates Mandela Day through community Action

The Moses Kotane Local Municipality, led by acting Mayor Cllr. Dithothi Tshetlhane joined the nation in commemorating Nelson Mandela Day by dedicating time and effort to serve the community in honour of the legacy of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

Acting Mayor Tshetlhane was joined by other members of executive committee, including Cllr. Caroline Motshabi, and Cllr. Bushy Manganye as well as acting Director of Community Services Mr. Noah Moeng.

The event brought together a diverse mix of stakeholders, Councillors, officials, businesses community and youth representatives, all unified by a common goal of improving the environment and giving back to the community in Nelson Mandela’s honour.

Participants rolled up their sleeves and partcipated in a range activities including:

  • Picking up litter and cleaning walkways
  • Cleaning illegal dumping sites
  • Distribiting Environmental awareness pamphlets
  • Educating residents about recycling and responsible waste disposal

Cllr. Tshetlhane emphasized the importance of active citizenship in her address “Mandela Day is more than a once-off campaign- it is a call to action. As public servants, and as members of our communities, we all have a role to play in shaping a better tomorrow. Today we are not only honouring Madiba’s legacy but also showing that each of us can make a difference in the lives of others.”

The bodirelo industrial area was strategically chosen for its high viability and growing concerns about illegal dumping and poor waste management in the precinct. By focusing on this area, the municipality aims to promote a culture of cleanliness, safety and shared responsibility among both businesses and residents.

The campaing also served as an opportunity to educate the public on sustainable environmental practices. Pamphlets were distributed with messages on the importance of regular waste collectins schedule, the danger of pollution to public health and economic development, reporting of illegal dumping and community involvement in maintaining public spaces.

Cllr. Caroline Motshabi said ” As the Municipality we are grateful for the overwhelming support we received today from all sectors of society. Environmental responsibility is a shared duty, and today’s collaboration shows what we can achieve when we come together with purpose”.

Acting director of Community Services Mr. Noah Moeng thanked all stakeholders who sacrificed their time and energy to support the campaign and urged everyone to carry the Mandela spirit forward by continuing to contribite positively to their communities.

In closing Portfolio head of Community Services: Cllr. Manganye echoed these sentiments “Let us remember that the lagacy of Nelson Mandela lives in the actions we take, whether big or small, every gesture of kindness and service matters”
Cllr. Manganye further commited that the Municipality would continue to initiate and support simillar programs throughout the year as part of its broader strategy to promote environmental conservation, community participation and improved service delivery.
